Background

In 2013, This Is My Digital Life, a personality quiz and application used Facebook to distribute its personality test. Whilst the users that signed up to the personality test consented to the app to access their Facebook data, the app also harvested data from their friends on Facebook, representing a further 87 Million users.

It appears that the data collected by This Is My Digital Life was then made available to Cambridge Analytica who created a tool to predict personalities and used the data mined from This Is My Digital Life to target specific advertising to them.

By late 2015, Facebook found out that information had been harvested beyond the 270,000 odd users. However, at the time, Facebook failed to alert users and subsequently took only limited steps to recover and secure the information by sending a lawyer's letter requesting the data be destroyed.

On 17 March 2018, a story appeared in the New York Times and The Observer that Cambridge Analytica had accessed the Facebook profiles of 50 million users which had been harvested as a result of approximately 270,000 users accessing the This Is My Digital Life website and application.

On 4 April 2018, Facebook revealed that over 311,127 Australians have been caught up in the improper use of Facebook data by Cambridge Analytica.
